Design Principles #2; Experimenting with layout

Design Principles #1; Experimenting with layout

How layout influences our design (Part 2)

Whether you are working in publishing, UI or advertising, the fundamental ideas (which may overlap) about the practice of good ‘layout’ composition will always form the basic structure of your design. The elements form the ‘vocabulary‘ of the design, while the principles constitute the broader aspects of its composition. Here I have compiled a second set of loose design principles that all revolve around the fundamentals of layout graphic design.

7. Pattern Design

Patterns always been a safe bet for the design arsenal. Repetitive shapes form the back bone of effective graphic design

8. Close up with Nature

Close up with Nature

Imagery using nature as layout foundations can be created using scale, Natures color and shape have evolved over millions of years, so use them well and can’t go wrong. Don’t forget to follow core design principles and use contrast, it helps to create a focal point in your design.

9. Design as a Pastiche

The typical smoking imagery where the focal point is empathised in the distance and is the center of interest in your layout. Emphasis can be created through scale and placement with in the overall layout.

10. Inspiration from the Album Cover

Balance is the consideration of visual weight and importance. This style is also for the album designer in me and every other graphic designer.

11. The Designers Favourite – ‘T-Shirt Design’

The Designers Favourite –

Should I ever get onto the business of selling T shirts, like the majority of designers aspire to do this is possible way forward. Simple, solid colour references to graphic orientated imagery. It’s always a good reference to look at what the new generation of T-Shirt designers are doing too

12. The Double Entendre

The Double Entendre

Maintain balance with the size of your elements. Consider both the size and and meaning – if you create similarity and contrast that from completely different perspectives, interesting design can result.
